RED CARPET MONITOR: SAG announces nominees

The Screen Actors Guild has announced their 2012 nominees in both film and TV. Because this primarily is a film site, we’re just going to cover film here; check Larry Richman’s coverage over on Indie Film Spotlight if you also want television nominees.

The SAG Awards are usually more of a harbinger of potential Academy Award nominees, as many of the actors are members of the Academy and thus vote on the acting performances there as well. But there are just as many who are NOT Academy members, so it could throw some things off.

It should also be said that they are one of the few major awards which have a “Best Ensemble” and while that’s good, and Oscar should also adopt that award, it can also be noted that people who are deserving of being included in the award are often left out. Many people were a bit nonplussed at the Guild’s failure to include Nick Krause and Amara Miller as part of the ensemble for “The Descendants” last year, even though both were very much featured throughout the film. It didn’t matter in the grand scheme of things though, since the award went to “The Help” anyway.

Here we go…time to pat their own backs, as it were…
